In the news: Mike Heiligenstein, CTRMA Executive Director
Mike Heiligenstein has been the Executive Director of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (Greater Austin region) since its inception in 2003. Over the past few years, the Mobility Authority has embarked on an ambitious toll road program as approved by the regional MPO. Their first facility, 183A, opened in 2007 and has exceeded all expectations as to demand and revenue. In early 2009, 183A successfully converted to all-electronic toll collection. The Mobility Authority has several more projects ready to be financed and others moving through various development stages.
Mike’s public service history includes the following:
- 23 years as an Elected Official in Central Texas
- Chair of National Association of Counties (NACo) committee on Air Quality
- Chair of NACo Committee on Water Quality
- Appointed member of Austin Area Mass Transit Committee
- Founding member of Austin-San Antonio Corridor Council, serving as Vice-Chair for two terms under then Chair, Mayor Henry Cisneros of San Antonio
- Chair of regional Clean Air Committee that negotiated an early action, voluntary program with EPA
- Founding member of Envision Central Texas, a regional land use and policy initiative
- 15 year County Commissioner in Williamson County, a rapidly growing Central Texas County
- Elected to International Bridge Tunnel Turnpike Association Board of Directors in 2008
- Appointed to the Texas Transportation Institute Advisory Board in 2009
- Founder of Williamson County Trails Capital Program
- Spearheaded first major (500+acres) parkland purchase in Williamson County
- Led efforts to develop, propose and pass a $500 million road bond package that leveraged the purchase of corridors for major area roadways
- Sponsored resolution by Williamson County to endorse light rail in region
The Mobility Authority has a $1.5 billion comprehensive regional transportation program in various stages of development, trails under construction, a commuter rail study underway and is exploring parking garage construction in conjunction with a managed lane project. The Mobility Authority may also respond to local requests for the study of regional air facilities.
